Training Trances by John Overdurf and Julie Silverthorn

By Chris Harrison - Posted November 2008

I brought this book after watching the authors keep an NLP group spellbound for a couple of hours, on a hot and sticky London night.

This is one of the more advanced books on hypnosis or NLP I have reviewed, but I had to review it as it's absolutely great.

The book covers the use of Milton Erickson's Language patterns, hypnotic techniques, and use of metaphor within a training environment. It is written in the form of a seminar transcript, with various notes and asides added.

There are very few quality resources on Hypnosis and Training, and those that do exist tend to concentrate on using Hypnosis and NLP to improve your ability to train, rather than using Hypnosis as an integral part of the training.

This is one of the few books I have read at least three times, simply because I always notice something new each time, and a read through always helps me think of new ideas to use myself.

It's also one of the best books to read for a good description of Milton's language patterns.

This is a book to read when you are alone - the transcripts in the book will have you drifting in and out as you read.

And just a last note - don't let the photo of the authors near the back of the book put you off (Sorry John and Julie - I had to mention it).
